The Office of Postdoctoral Studies (OPS) at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln is a service organization dedicated to the development and support of postdoctoral research associates and other early-career trainees. To help our trainees make the most of their current career stage, we provide information, individual consultation services, networking opportunities, and social events that enhance their professional skills, career viability, and quality of life.
OPS sponsors a variety of events, seminars, and workshops each academic year on a range of professional skills and career development topics such as curriculum vitae, résumé, and cover letter writing; interviewing for academic and non-academic positions; mentoring and research leadership; and faculty roles and responsibilities, just to name a few. Consultation services available to postdocs through our office include teaching development, with or without a teaching assignment; and job search-related services such as CV or résumé review and mock interviews. We confer with our Postdoctoral Advisory Council (PAC)—a volunteer body of postdocs from disciplines across campus—to identify postdoc needs and work to find or develop solutions.
We celebrate the contributions of postdocs to the University’s research enterprise with our annual Outstanding Postdoc Awards, an annual Postdoc Appreciation Week, and a Postdoc/PI Picnic each spring. We also operate a need-based travel grant program specifically for postdocs wishing to engage in professional development activities such as presenting research at conferences.
